A number of the Australian team to compete at the 2017 UCI MTB World Championships recently attended a four day camp in Cairns.
The squad included junior and U23 cross-country and downhill riders along with team staff as they prepared for the biggest mountain bike event of the year.
Lead by Australian team manager Evan James, riders had the chance to familiarise themselves with not only the course and conditions but also coaching staff during full race day simulations, as well as recovery sessions.
“The camp was quite an ambitious undertaking but the outcome was well worth the effort. It’s not often Australians have a home country advantage and this camp really maximised it,” James said.
“The junior athletes as well as the mechanics, coaching and management staff all have a big head start on the rest of the world and have their strategies and logistics dialled. Big thanks to all involved especially the various supporters in Cairns that stepped in to assist.”
A 64 strong Australian team has been named and will assemble in Cairns for the world championships from 5-10th September.
