Ivory’s Golden Season Continues

Posted by mtba, April 29, 2018

Cameron Ivory (SA) has claimed his third Australian jersey this season with victory at the 2018 MTBA National Marathon Championships at Douglas Mountain Bike Reserve in Townsville, Queensland on Sunday.

Ivory, who already has the green and gold cross-country and cross-country eliminator title in his keeping broke the three year dominance of Brendan Johnston (ACT) who finished with the silver and Tasman Nankervis  (VIC) with bronze.

“At the start of the year I didn’t expect this to get any national title, but it’s turned into dream season,” he said.

The Trek rider put in a fifth and final lap of 49.44, and it was during the final seven kilometres of the race where he broke away from the three time defending champion.

“He (Trekky) really had me under the pump going into the climb I was doing all I could to hold him and then I went all out on little fire road climb with under half a lap to go and opened up a small gap.”

In the elite women, Anna Beck (QLD) claimed her first ever national marathon title passing Tory Thomas (VIC) on the final lap to take the top step, with Holly Harris (NSW) in third.

“Didn’t think in my wildest dreams this would happen,” the Queensland based Beck said moments after crossing the line.

“Coming out on the road I thought well it’s now or never and I’ll regret it for the rest of my life if I don’t do it.”

“So I put in some road watts and caught up to her (Thomas) relatively easily and sat on her wheel for a bit then up the bitumen climb I did a two minute max effort.”

It was a disappointing day for Harris, who held the front position for the majority of the race until a flat at the top of the course saw her loose massive minutes on lap three.

On Saturday, Piper Albrecht and Verity Evans took out the Junior Men and Women’s titles, with Momo Frank and Holly Lubcke claiming the green and gold jersey in the Under 17’s.
