New Zealand and England dominated the men’s and women’s cross-country mountain bike race at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games held at Nerang yesterday.
Sam Gaze (NZL) and Anton Cooper (NZL) took out the gold and silver medals after an epic 6 lap battle, with the finish coming down to a sprint finish with South African Alan Hatherly claiming the bronze.
It was a tough day in the saddle for Daniel McConnell (AUS), who despite being cheered on by a massive crowd lining the course could only finish seventh.
While in the women, Annie Last (ENG) powered through her five laps and subdued the challenge of Evie Richards (ENG) to claim the gold nearly a minute in front of her country woman.
Hayley Smith (CAN) rounded out the podium with bronze after she won an intriguing battle with fellow Canadian and one of the early favourites Emily Batty.
Rebecca McConnell (AUST), who was looking for another Games medal after bronze four years ago, couldn’t match the early speed of the women but fought her way through the pack to finish in sixth.
