Mountain Bike Australia (MTBA) can confirm an E-MTB category will be part of the 2019 National Championships to be held in Bright, Victoria from the 4-7th April 2019.
The format will be a stand-alone race on cross-country trails with competitors grouped into ten year age groups starting from Under 19’s up to Masters 5+ category.
Winners will be named Australian E-MTB champion and receive an award.
MTBA CEO Shane Coppin said the popularity of e-mountain bikes has been embraced and continues to expand around the world for recreational riding, and it was only a matter of time until it evolved into something people wished to become competitive in.
“The addition of e-mountain bikes to our championships also expands the accessibilty of the sport to those who may have not previously been able to compete at a National Championship level.”
“It also caters for a new style of competitor and compliments the introduction of an Adaptive MTB category and other new events at our 2019 National Championships,” he said.
Rules for the event are currently being worked on.
The UCI has also intergrated E-MTB into the UCI mountain bike regulations and will organise world championships for e-mountain bikes from 2019, with the first edition to be held at Mont-Saine-Anne, Canada next year.
Online registrations for the 2019 National Championships open soon.
