Mountain Bike Australia (MTBA) and Cycling Australia (CA) are pleased to introduce a new Gravel National Championships on 16 September this year as part of the Wiggle Amy’s Gran Fondo weekend festivities.
Gravel Grinding is riding a bike on gravel, loose stones or any unpaved surface using any type of bike including cyclo-cross, mountain bike, gravel grinder or hybrid.
The discipline of Gravel Grinding has seen tremendous growth in interest through events, bike sales, and participation over recent years.
The 2018 Gravel National Championships will be the perfect ride for those who want to take their riding on the road less travelled. With a new course for the Championships, the race will see competitors starting and finishing in Lorne and will form part of the Wiggle Amy’s Gran Fondo weekend.
The course will cover a distance of 65kilometres including 1,500 meters of climbing and some technical sections to keep things interesting.
The Championships will have categories for all ages from juniors through to all Masters categories and will be conducted on the Saturday of the Wiggle Amy’s Gran Fondo weekend which will allow participants to take part in both the Championships and the Gran Fondo event.
Cycling Australia CEO Steve Drake said that the new Championships helps continue the growth of cycling into new formats.
“We are pleased to support this growing discipline with an inaugural national championships. We’ve seen increases in participation in Gravel domestically and internationally and a national championship was the natural next step in the growth of gravel racing.”
The Wiggle Amy’s Gran Fondo weekend was the natural place for us to add this event; it’s a fantastic weekend of fun with the participation events, and showcases Australia’s best road riders with Amy’s Otway Tour” he added.
MTBA CEO Shane Coppin stated “It’s exciting to see new formats of cycling continually being introduced that expand the opportunities and experiences for participants. MTBA are very pleased to be involved with this new National Championship initiative and believe that it is a great addition to the extremely successful Wiggle Amy’s Gran Fondo event. Many riders continue to enjoy experiences riding on road, dirt and gravel and this new event should attract high interest from both participants and spectators.”
Entries for the Championships are now open via the Wiggle Amy’s Gran Fondo website. CA and MTBA members are entitled to an event discount of $10.
Discipline and event regulations will be posted in the coming months.
