The Level 0 MTB Skills Instructor course is the entry point to the MTBA coaching pathway and is aimed at parents, clubs and teachers who want to learn the basics of group management, risk assessment and skills teaching techniques. Participants successfully completing the course will be equipped to lead beginner group rides and lead basic skills instruction sessions. The accreditation involves approximately 3 hours of pre course work followed by a 1 day face to face course. There are no post course requirements and successful participants will gain their accreditation at the end of the course.

Participants need to be at least 16 years of age.
MTBA also recognises the skills instructor qualifications of a number of commercial skills instruction providers. If you have completed the Australian MTB Instructors (AMBIA) Level 1, the Professional MTB Instructors Association (PMBIA) Level 1 course or the International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA) ICP Level 1 course you can apply for MTBA accreditation using this Application Form.
Additionally coaches with other forms of accreditation (for example BMX Level 1) and/or extensive practical experience may also be eligible to apply for recognition of current competency (RCC). Accreditation will involve a pre-course trail audit and a two-day course split between theory sessions and plenty of time on the trail. Assessments will include pre-course trail audit, instructing on a blue trail, risk management documentation and trailside mechanical repairs. There are no post course requirements and successful participants will gain their accreditation at the end of the course.

This course is for coaches who want to work with elite athletes competing in National Championships or International competition. In particular, this course provides the underpinning knowledge for coaching an emerging elite young athlete who seeks to represent Australia at Junior or Under 23 international events.
This course is delivered over six days by a leading expert chosen by the UCI. The course provides in-depth information on the physiology and physiological assessment of an athlete, performance monitoring and assessment, sports psychology in cycling, advanced racing skills and race preparation, and recovery and crisis management of the injured cyclist.

Coaches working outside of direct club activities with MTBA & AusCycling members are not covered by AusCycling insurance however coaches & instructors working as sole traders and earning income now have the option to join the AusCycling coach affiliation program.
The program extends the AusCycling insurance cover to provide MTBA & AusCycling accredited coaches & instructors with professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover for both voluntary and paid work when coaching or instructing both MTBA & AusCycling members and non members.

Most importantly to remember is coaches & instructors must have completed MTBA Level 0, MTBA Level 1 or UCI Level 2 to be able to coach at your club.
