From January 2020, MTBA will no longer be awarding National Champion jerseys to Under 13’s in any National Championships category. In consultation with the MTBA Sport and Technical Management Advisory Commission (MAC – Sport & Technical), a decision has been made to:
U13’s will now be provided with a range of opportunities to gain experience, skills and participate at National Championship events but in the form of “support” races rather than being categorised as actual National Championship events. The objective is to use these events to support and mentor young riders at these events in a different format than previous.
This change will assist by removing the requirement of full race membership to participate as is the case for National Championship event entry. Thus Race Event Licences and Free Trial Memberships will be acceptable for U13 registration in support events during National Championship events.
At the National Championships in Bright this coming March (11-15), XCC, XCO, DHI and XCR support races will be provided, and all events will be provided Tier 1 National Cup status.
A specific race time for the U13 DHI category, has been provided for in the schedule and we are currently working with the host organising committee to also provide specific U13 practise time. This information will be publicised as details are confirmed.
MTBA are committed to providing as much opportunity for our juniors as possible to race, compete and develop their MTB skills but are conscious of doing this in line with worlds best practice with regards to rider safety, junior development and our competition objectives, regulations, policies and procedures to ensure we apply the highest level of safety and care for our junior athletes well-being.
More information will follow and MTBA are excited by this new step in the development and participation opportunities for riders under 13 years wishing to compete and be a part of the National Mountain bike season and especially our premier events.
Course Maps for the 2020 MTBA National Championships will be released closer to the event. Please check back for further updates.
The MTBA Achievement Awards recognise the phenomenal contributions made by the clubs, members, volunteers, riders, coaches, event promoters and commissaires in the mountain bike community. The awards are yours and MTBA’s way of acknowledging achievements and recognising these contributions.
Nominations for the 2019 awards (for the period 1 January 2019 – 31 December 2019) are now open.

If successful, applicants will receive a $500 grant.
