Castle Hill Blackstone Reserve – Ipswich, Qld

MTBA recently caught up with Ben Thomas, Ipswich City Council’s Nature-based Recreation Officer, for a ride on the approximately 13km of mountain bike trails at Castle Hill Blackstone Reserve.

Sold to Council for a measly sum of $1.00 in 2014, Castle Hill Blackstone Reserve was once bustling with a different type of activity than it does today.

Coal mining at Castle Hill Blackstone Reserve took place from 1866 to the mid 1940s. The early mining was done by means of shafts and tunnels, which were dug using hand tools by candlelight. Riding through the Reserve it’s hard not to be reminded of the areas culture rich mining heritage with remnants of the shafts, tunnels and the famous ‘Castle’. Brynhyfryd a three-storey mansion was built by Welsh ‘Coal King’, Lewis Thomas (1832-1913). Mr Thomas was one of the most successful coal miners of the day thanks to the abundant coal reserves under what is now Castle Hill Blackstone Reserve. Brynhyfryd featured marble fireplaces, electric lighting, cedar joinery, stately verandas on each level, and 49 rooms laid out over 24 metres squared. Sadly, after Brynhyfryd was sold to Rylance Collieries in 1936, mine excavations under the building rendered it unstable and it was demolished in 1937.

Since acquiring the Reserve Council have been working with local riders to transform the land into a quality MTB park while ensuring to retain the hand built character of the trails. Castle Hill Trails Alliance work hard to maintain the 15 or so trails.

Thanks to Ipswich City Council recently additional parking and an event area was created at the base of the hill. With work on a new pump track due to commence in the coming days Castle Hill will continue to provide great riding opportunities.

Kalamunda Mountain Bike Collective

Kalamunda Mountain Bike Collective is commencing a detailed plan or “framework” in conjunction with the land managers Department of Parks and Wildlife, and other stakeholders.

This is conducted by volunteers and will be of no cost to KMBC members. This will form the basis of future trail development in the Kalamunda area. Over $9.5 million in mountain bike specific funding pledged by Government ahead of the state election so the outlook for trail development in Western Australia is very positive.

KMBC are holding their annual raffle with support from Specialized Bicycles Australia and Al’s Cycle Surgery which will raise funds towards trail development and maintenance of the Kalamunda Trail Network.

The trails are attracting ever increasing use and the work done helps to keep them enjoyable and sustainable. The grand prize is any Specialized bike up to RRP of $7,200 (e-bikes excluded). Tickets go on sale 1 March 2017 and the raffle is drawn 11 June 2017. For full details visit www.kalamundacollective.com.au

Mansfield Mt Buller Cycle Club

Summer heated up for the Mansfield Mt Buller Cycling Club (MMBCC) straight out of the 2017 starting gate with delivery of the 4th Round of the Victorian Downhill Mountain Bike Series, over the weekend of January 21st and 22nd.

For the 2nd year in a row the Mt Buller event was delivered by the local MTBA club with volunteers going above and beyond to get the job done. Course setting on the Friday saw a group of hardy club members bunt the 2km “International DH” course in less than ideal conditions. With heavy fog and persistent rainfall, once again (2016 saw similar conditions for the course setting team!) this crew Saturday’s practice day arrived to stunning clear blue skies, there might have been maybe one or two pesky clouds hanging around, and by 10:00am the event village at the top of the Northside Express chairlift was bustling with riders, team tents and their associated entourage.

Race Day Sunday’s weather turned out to be even better than Saturday, not sure how? Over 200 downhill warrior’s slayed the International DH trail on their way to the finish line. Over the two days MMBCC members manned numerous marshal points down the course, delivering 1 st class event support and safety to all the riders.

What this event again showed is the delivery of these events is a massive undertaking from numerous parties.

The MMBCC received amazing support from The Victorian Downhill Series Committee, the Mt Buller & Mt Stirling Resort Management, Buller Ski Lifts, St John Ambulance and Ambulance Victoria.

Team Mt Beauty

It has been a busy start to 2017 for Team Mt Beauty with heaps of visitors to the town enjoying the trails in the Big Hill MTB Park and a couple of marquee events.

Volunteer club members have also been busy in Big Hill with trail marking and signage, preparation of race courses and continuing maintenance of our extensive trail network. An ongoing trail signage project has continued, making the park more ‘user friendly’ for both locals and visitors. Two additional riding loops have been formally marked, providing three loops of increasing length and challenge that give riders a great taste of the Big Hill experience. These loops all start from the trailhead car park.

The Mount Beauty round of the Victorian Gravity Enduro Series was very successfully hosted by Team Mt Beauty in January. Five great courses were put together for the event with nearly 250 riders competing. As we go to press, the club is just wrapping up after successfully hosting of a round of the MTBA National DHI Series.

Some of our female riders have formed Mt Beauty Spoke Sisters, an informal crew with a Facebook group to communicate and promote girls getting out on their bikes. We would encourage visiting ladies to join the group and get amongst it.
